I made it into the Top 10, vote for me in the "Maker Masterpiece" category <a href="http://makeamazingcontest.scotchbrand.com/EntryDetailsvoting.aspx?EntryID=180&voteid=8&votechoiceid=44" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xQB8KIbYbsM/U97wqHFZ6BI/AAAAAAAABDE/lzkEC9spEls/s1600/the+gilded+pear+-+scotch+%23makermasterpiece.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xQB8KIbYbsM/U97wqHFZ6BI/AAAAAAAABDE/lzkEC9spEls/s1600/the+gilded+pear+-+scotch+%23makermasterpiece.jpg" height="400" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For my second entry for the Scotch Make Amazing Contest, I created this fun and inviting play nook using all sorts of Scotch tape, Scotch Repair Glue (works so great I may never use anything else!), Command strips and the regular Scotch crafting supplies including scissors and a utility knife. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vPmFg5pQ9_A/U97wuflKXlI/AAAAAAAABDQ/R9JIuCNnxKo/s1600/DSC_9469.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vPmFg5pQ9_A/U97wuflKXlI/AAAAAAAABDQ/R9JIuCNnxKo/s1600/DSC_9469.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hXE2z_0HWts/U97wwCo21DI/AAAAAAAABDo/GPaRRPHnDBE/s1600/DSC_9525.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hXE2z_0HWts/U97wwCo21DI/AAAAAAAABDo/GPaRRPHnDBE/s1600/DSC_9525.jpg" height="400" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The tent in the play nook is perfect for reading or napping and was created using two pieces of foamboard and then decorated in Scotch tape in a diamond pattern. I used two of my favorite patterns, Scotch Peacock Duct tape and Scotch Mint Mosaic Masking tape. The front poles are dowels wrapped in tape and then glued using Scotch Repair Glue. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LljxpgYYpG8/U97wucX7bcI/AAAAAAAABDM/bRbmqTg34gY/s1600/DSC_9474.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LljxpgYYpG8/U97wucX7bcI/AAAAAAAABDM/bRbmqTg34gY/s1600/DSC_9474.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
The "play" letters are wooden letters covered in two types of Scotch masking tape.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-b-qveJhgpaM/U97wucCz8_I/AAAAAAAABDY/P9RxqyIe53c/s1600/DSC_9489.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-b-qveJhgpaM/U97wucCz8_I/AAAAAAAABDY/P9RxqyIe53c/s1600/DSC_9489.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
The playful butterfly was created on poster board and decorated in Scotch Expressions tape and Scotch Duct tape. All of its fine details were hand-cut with my Scotch Utility Knife.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-srRHK8K0QmU/U97wuzAeBRI/AAAAAAAABDc/bOeRKitoWHU/s1600/DSC_9513.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-srRHK8K0QmU/U97wuzAeBRI/AAAAAAAABDc/bOeRKitoWHU/s1600/DSC_9513.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The little bunting is hung on twine and created by folding over pieces of Scotch tape and then trimming the ends. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AV8BC3aMhb8/U97wwdlyIyI/AAAAAAAABDs/pB_iuvVcfLc/s1600/DSC_9526.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AV8BC3aMhb8/U97wwdlyIyI/AAAAAAAABDs/pB_iuvVcfLc/s1600/DSC_9526.jpg" height="400" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The tent is really our favorite part of the nook...or wait, is it the butterfly?....or maybe the cute little bunting?...maybe we just love it all. It is a great place to read or color and I find my kids hanging out in it quite often.</div>

I made it into the Top 10, vote for me in the "Education Creations" category <a href="http://makeamazingcontest.scotchbrand.com/EntryDetailsvoting.aspx?EntryID=179&voteid=9&votechoiceid=49" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PxbGQCEpjxo/U97lzlRV2kI/AAAAAAAABAw/K1w5m-4CjR0/s1600/the+gilded+pear+-+scotch+make+amazing+contest+entry.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PxbGQCEpjxo/U97lzlRV2kI/AAAAAAAABAw/K1w5m-4CjR0/s1600/the+gilded+pear+-+scotch+make+amazing+contest+entry.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
I decided to enter the Scotch Make Amazing Contest with this bright and colorful bulletin board display. It is created using a lot Scotch Expressions tape, Scotch Duct Tape, Scotch Washi Tape, and my Scotch Laminator along with a few other Scotch essentials including a utility knife, scissors double sided tape and glue. I thought you would enjoy the details on how each of the pieces were created. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dRq6M9f1O7I/U97ohWxr-JI/AAAAAAAABA8/wZvQfGZsrtU/s1600/DSC_9321.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dRq6M9f1O7I/U97ohWxr-JI/AAAAAAAABA8/wZvQfGZsrtU/s1600/DSC_9321.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
"Reading" is created out of tape. I printed the outlines of the letters on white cardstock and then used various colors of tape, some cut into tiny triangles and arranged in a mosaic pattern. Scotch star shaped Post-It Notes decorate the entire board. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Blk7Algu66s/U97oinRGpQI/AAAAAAAABBk/ltgnMw_keVw/s1600/DSC_9336.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Blk7Algu66s/U97oinRGpQI/AAAAAAAABBk/ltgnMw_keVw/s1600/DSC_9336.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4ZfoYmp7-vo/U97oisc_unI/AAAAAAAABBQ/susKnbBWRqs/s1600/DSC_9337.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4ZfoYmp7-vo/U97oisc_unI/AAAAAAAABBQ/susKnbBWRqs/s1600/DSC_9337.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This word took me hours to complete. I think I was dreaming of tiny triangles that night.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5qqHh_8kobo/U97ojMtME0I/AAAAAAAABBU/ehz_G2lqf1I/s1600/DSC_9342.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5qqHh_8kobo/U97ojMtME0I/AAAAAAAABBU/ehz_G2lqf1I/s1600/DSC_9342.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The top of my bulletin board display is decorated with a box of books, the box decorated in tape to look like a shuttle panel, the inside with Scotch Duct tape. The containers of pencils and bookmarks are decorated in tape as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iwNLvvSi8x4/U97omBIp_7I/AAAAAAAABCE/lyAWLWPDrNo/s1600/DSC_9379.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iwNLvvSi8x4/U97omBIp_7I/AAAAAAAABCE/lyAWLWPDrNo/s1600/DSC_9379.jpg" height="400" width="265" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also included the Scotch doodle pad for writing down favorite books or quotes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vwU83qxnwOU/U97omS7Qv-I/AAAAAAAABCQ/x1xvRUlp_Y4/s1600/DSC_9387.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vwU83qxnwOU/U97omS7Qv-I/AAAAAAAABCQ/x1xvRUlp_Y4/s1600/DSC_9387.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I designed these bookmarks and am including a link for a free printable <a href="https://app.box.com/s/r4pjaeite9naoas0kfen">here</a> (for personal use only).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I printed the bookmarks and decorated the backs with Scotch tape and then sent them through my handy, dandy Scotch laminator. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eYpzWBrPrYQ/U97ol-GiVuI/AAAAAAAABCI/hi10uo20akY/s1600/DSC_9376.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eYpzWBrPrYQ/U97ol-GiVuI/AAAAAAAABCI/hi10uo20akY/s1600/DSC_9376.jpg" height="400" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The pencils are wrapped in different colors of Scotch tape. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A_QmJpEDOqo/U97okPUk3pI/AAAAAAAABB0/kDYYD47fxRs/s1600/DSC_9352.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A_QmJpEDOqo/U97okPUk3pI/AAAAAAAABB0/kDYYD47fxRs/s1600/DSC_9352.jpg" height="400" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fVzSw5BTaqM/U97ohvM76iI/AAAAAAAABBE/Djk2Os9ShCs/s1600/DSC_9327.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fVzSw5BTaqM/U97ohvM76iI/AAAAAAAABBE/Djk2Os9ShCs/s1600/DSC_9327.jpg" height="400" width="270" /></a></div>
<span style="text-align: center;">Every rocket theme needs a countdown, so I included a countdown of the top 4th grade books. The entire bulletin board is decorated in Scotch Star Shaped Post-It Notes. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CNL7av2rZPk/U97ohtEM1wI/AAAAAAAABBA/Cr1PT6MRS-o/s1600/DSC_9310.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CNL7av2rZPk/U97ohtEM1wI/AAAAAAAABBA/Cr1PT6MRS-o/s1600/DSC_9310.jpg" height="400" width="265" /></a></div>
<br />
These fun little rockets were so easy to make using the Scotch tape and Scotch glue. They would make a great project for the classroom and are fun to create and decorate however you want.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SaEP0srUE3Q/U97olGFDA2I/AAAAAAAABCA/BAx6Ylp8dM4/s1600/DSC_9365.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SaEP0srUE3Q/U97olGFDA2I/AAAAAAAABCA/BAx6Ylp8dM4/s1600/DSC_9365.jpg" height="400" width="265" /></a></div>
The huge rocket is about 3 feet long and was created using poster board decorated in various kinds of Scotch tape.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HDR3rxUl6Uc/U97olLKgi6I/AAAAAAAABB4/6CpvE1Res2c/s1600/DSC_9369.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HDR3rxUl6Uc/U97olLKgi6I/AAAAAAAABB4/6CpvE1Res2c/s1600/DSC_9369.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The moon is also decorated with silver Scotch tape to add a bit of moon detail. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NBDMycbjO9k/U97okQlIgQI/AAAAAAAABBo/awTAauKD7n0/s1600/DSC_9357.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NBDMycbjO9k/U97okQlIgQI/AAAAAAAABBo/awTAauKD7n0/s1600/DSC_9357.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
Every little reading nook should have a bright colored rug. The rug is made using Scotch masking tape and Duct tape. The bright colors and diagonal pattern make it fun in the space.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3_xfhpwlxGI/U97onFX-70I/AAAAAAAABCY/R5jhy5jUVCw/s1600/DSC_9399.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3_xfhpwlxGI/U97onFX-70I/AAAAAAAABCY/R5jhy5jUVCw/s1600/DSC_9399.jpg" height="400" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the bookcase, I used Scotch Duct tape and clear packing tape to cover these magazine holders and to break up different genres of books. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7EgcwsXgXGo/U97oiU5RCUI/AAAAAAAABBM/P4sGhWaRPTE/s1600/DSC_9334.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7EgcwsXgXGo/U97oiU5RCUI/AAAAAAAABBM/P4sGhWaRPTE/s1600/DSC_9334.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had so much fun creating all of these little projects out of tape. My kids love the little "library" in our house and never want to take it down.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

In fact, infertility and adoption are things we often talk about around here, that kind of talk is completely welcome and normal to us (so much so that sometimes I forget it isn't normal to talk about with just anyone ;-). What I don't always talk about is the crazy, hormonal banshee that is around our house sometimes. So here we go, let's get real about it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ngCUqfk7CvI/UovsLt_dQxI/AAAAAAAAA9g/hui7pgFNe_Y/s1600/DSC_7893.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ngCUqfk7CvI/UovsLt_dQxI/AAAAAAAAA9g/hui7pgFNe_Y/s400/DSC_7893.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
There are some days where I want to rip my hair out, where I know that I am being completely ridiculous and think to myself, you've got to pull it together, but I really just can't. My hormones take over and I am all over the place. I am certain I should probably lock myself in my room and not come out (and trust me, that has happened and probably welcomed by my family members).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oMdtGm-_gZc/UovsEMGfVMI/AAAAAAAAA9c/LBgVnmk6bmQ/s1600/DSC_7898.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oMdtGm-_gZc/UovsEMGfVMI/AAAAAAAAA9c/LBgVnmk6bmQ/s400/DSC_7898.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
But my insane cycles that I have had since I was 12 years old just added to all of that and I would turn into a raging lunatic. While I thought some of that had gotten better, I realize now that I had just accepted the fact that my hormones were that way and tried to deal with it in the best way I could.<br />

What I didn't know up until 5 months ago was how much better it could be. When I had the opportunity to work with <a href="http://www.elase.com/utah/restorative-hormone-therapy">Elase</a> I was excited about so many things. Of course <a href="http://thegildedpear.blogspot.com/2013/06/did-someone-say-manbeard.html">getting rid of my manbeard</a> was at the top of the list (thank you PCOS), the <a href="http://thegildedpear.blogspot.com/2013/07/vive-weight-loss-at-elase.html">VIVE weight loss program</a>, photo facials, chemical peels and even Botox, but I was also completely intrigued by the bio-identical hormone therapy. So, I set up an appointment to meet with Catherine, the nurse practitioner at Elase, and had my blood work done.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CcZfVmQAdTM/UovvjSEybnI/AAAAAAAAA-U/6F0yqcrhWRU/s1600/DSC_4576.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CcZfVmQAdTM/UovvjSEybnI/AAAAAAAAA-U/6F0yqcrhWRU/s400/DSC_4576.jpg" width="268" /></a></div>
I went back the next week to go over the results and she asked me a few questions. For example, did I felt anxious? Sure, sometimes. She asked me if I had a hard time sleeping. Yes, but I am a busy mom of three with a lot on my plate!!! She asked me if I felt like I was always in attack mode and if even the smallest things irritated me. And I asked her if she had talked to my husband! Because certainly he must have told her how insane I could be because she was describing me to a tee. And then we laughed and laughed because that is one of my favorite things to do with the ladies at Elase.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zt4ntuespFo/Uovvjb2Dk6I/AAAAAAAAA-k/dPmnMoRfVEI/s1600/elase+medical+spa+draper+sugarhouse+utah.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zt4ntuespFo/Uovvjb2Dk6I/AAAAAAAAA-k/dPmnMoRfVEI/s400/elase+medical+spa+draper+sugarhouse+utah.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Catherine knew exactly why I was feeling that way and went over my blood work with me pointing out how low my progesterone was (basically non-existent) and how high my testosterone was (almost triple what it should be) as well as the lack of Vitamin D in my body. She went over the good aspects too like my thyroid and cholesterol levels. She sent in a prescription for progesterone and told me to use it as a tool. If I was feeling anxious and irritated I should take some progesterone because more than likely I was lacking and could use that boost.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-N-OSoWwUHV8/Uovuc4IO6fI/AAAAAAAAA-A/CUZ-1fYCJ84/s1600/DSC_7947.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-N-OSoWwUHV8/Uovuc4IO6fI/AAAAAAAAA-A/CUZ-1fYCJ84/s400/DSC_7947.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I am so, so glad I went to see Catherine to see how bio-identical hormones could help me. I haven't felt this good in ages. Truly. I don't feel like the crazy, hormonal banshee that I was (and had been for a while). As long as I have my progesterone and Vitamin D, I feel like my best self (except those days I forget and then I see a glimpse of that crazy banshee self that no one misses around here!). And this may be too much information (I told you I was keeping it real) but for the first time in my life, I have had a regular cycle for five months in a row. I will spare you the details but that alone has changed my life! I never knew it should be like this because it never has been until now. Thank you, Catherine & Elase! You are the best!<br />
<br />
And because <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ElaseMedicalSpas">Elase</a> loves my readers as much as I do, they are giving away a FREE Chemical Peel & Elase tote to one of you! While I haven't had a chance to get a chemical peel yet (it is definitely on my list), my good friend, Kim did and you can read about her experience <a href="http://www.kimorlandini.blogspot.com/2013/07/glycolic-chemical-peel-giveaway-elase.html">here</a>. Your skin can be feeling fresh and new just in time for the holidays! And for all of you up near Station Park in Farmington, they have a new location coming oh so soon, so enter away.<br />

I am sitting here in my cozy sweatshirt with a blanket on my lap and the thermostat saying it is a mere 63 degrees in my house. My popsicle toes definitely thought it was cooler than that. Fall is in the air. It always creeps up on us and lets us know the crisp air and cooler weather is here to stay. I am certain the change in weather warrants some hot cocoa, fuzzy slippers and a good book. I am also certain it warrants a free printable with the best things fall has to offer. I am happy to tell you that after just a few months of laser hair removal, it is almost non-existent. I am feeling much less...manly. I still have some peach fuzz that grows (don't we all) but I definitely don't worry about it every. single. day. like I was when the manbeard was in full force. I touch a few little hairs about once a week and other than that, I am no longer worrying about my pesky beard. Hallelujah!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j8rwyOiRt7o/UkWsrR97o9I/AAAAAAAAA64/pnM1TaXh0FI/s1600/DSC_7086.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j8rwyOiRt7o/UkWsrR97o9I/AAAAAAAAA64/pnM1TaXh0FI/s400/DSC_7086.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The laser hair removal treatments take less than five minutes and are not uncomfortable at all. I normally use Dr. Numb but the last time I completely forgot until I got to my appointment. While it was warm (it is a laser afterall), it wasn't painful. And since it is so fast and I had cool air blowing on my face, it wasn't a big deal.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The technician's at <a href="http://www.elase.com/utah/" target="_blank">Elase</a> are awesome and even ask where the thickest parts of my man beard were so they could go over them another time. I love that because those are the spots I definitely don't want to see coming back!<br />

Life is full of excitement, laughter and fun filled days but amongst all of that are the crazy, exhausting days. Days where I really just want to curl up in my bed and cry myself to sleep. Days where I know I don't have all of the answers but just try my best. Days where I pray that I am making the best decision for my kids and for our family. Days where I feel like a complete failure as a mom. </span></div>

It definitely took me a few shakes when I first started <a href="http://www.elase.com/utah/vive-weight-loss" target="_blank">the VIVE program</a> to make me feel like I could keep doing the meal replacement shakes. Here is my favorite recipe:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-w_rVjL0_DTY/UkUBxPLF0vI/AAAAAAAAA6Q/MfuIgHVf9W8/s1600/DSC_3974.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-w_rVjL0_DTY/UkUBxPLF0vI/AAAAAAAAA6Q/MfuIgHVf9W8/s400/DSC_3974.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
In the blender:<br />
<br />
4 oz. chocolate Hood milk <span style="font-size: x-small;">(I had never heard of this but Smith's & Walmart both carry it)</span><br />
1 Tbsp. Omega 3-6-9 Udo oil<br />
2 scoops chocolate WIO MRP<br />
6 to 8 ice cubes<br />
4 oz. of water<br />
4 drops of coconut or peanut butter flavoring<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Jbm_bge91uw/UeeuyXMLp2I/AAAAAAAAA0M/0_tO1-XFnzw/s1600/VIVE+weight+loss+coconut+extract+WIO+MRP+shake.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Jbm_bge91uw/UeeuyXMLp2I/AAAAAAAAA0M/0_tO1-XFnzw/s400/VIVE+weight+loss+coconut+extract+WIO+MRP+shake.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I simply add to blender in that order. Blend until all of the ice is finely mixed, grab a straw and enjoy. The coconut flavoring reminds me of an Almond Joy and since I am not eating anything like that anymore, it sort of feels like a treat. My back-up flavoring of choice is peanut butter. After all, who doesn't love peanut butter and chocolate?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
If I do not have time for the blender or am mixing it on the go, I simply add more ice (10 to 12 ice cubes rather than 6) and more water (8 oz. of water instead of 4). That way it is a bit thinner and it stays cold while I drink it. I like it to be more of a consistency of chocolate milk if I can't have it like an icy cold shake.<br />
<br />

I am beyond excited to have been introduced to the <a href="http://www.elase.com/utah/vive-weight-loss" target="_blank">VIVE weight loss program</a> at <a href="http://www.elase.com/utah/" target="_blank">Elase</a>. I am just starting my 12th week and have lost 20.2 lbs (17.3 of that being body fat!). After losing 7.5 lbs the first week, I knew I needed to keep doing it).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Me with 1 lb. of body fat. Add another 19 of those and that is what I have already lost after 12 weeks. </span></div>

While I know that shake replacements are not for everyone, I have found that for me, it is exactly what I needed. I love that the shakes take the aspect of food out of the picture for me. Me and food have obviously had a great relationship throughout the years but sometimes relationships aren't always good for us even if in the moment we really enjoy them. In this case, me and food needed a separation! That separation has been the best thing that has ever happened to me.<br />
<br />
I see food in a different light. Instead of thinking about what I am craving or what I might want to eat, when I am hungry, I just grab a shake. For dinner, I always make a great salad and have a lean protein or fish with it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hvgaIla6cAw/UeemLYQpToI/AAAAAAAAAx8/GFsfd-abP14/s1600/DSC_4599.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hvgaIla6cAw/UeemLYQpToI/AAAAAAAAAx8/GFsfd-abP14/s400/DSC_4599.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I won't lie, the first week I wondered if I could really keep it up. It took a few shakes before I figured out how to make them the way I like them. By day 3 of having mainly shakes, I was really feeling like a ravenous beast. I felt like I could have eaten a horse. Granted, I didn't. I stuck to the approved veggies and even stooped as low as buying a can of pickles (sorry, pickle fans!). I needed the crunch and salt aspect of it after drinking shakes. I also started chewing Extra Dessert gum (the lemon bar is my favorite) to try to curb the sweet tooth that is always plaguing me.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MYXp2CIHBN8/UeetInFR92I/AAAAAAAAAz0/OwOR0DwPQLQ/s1600/DSC_4577.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MYXp2CIHBN8/UeetInFR92I/AAAAAAAAAz0/OwOR0DwPQLQ/s400/DSC_4577.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
The other thing that has really helped keep me on track is the InBody scan that I weigh in on every single week. Thinking of it as weighing in really doesn't do it justice! In fact, I am certain it should have some super-stealth, cool name. But, let's just call it George. It does indeed tell me my weight but also tells me my body fat, lean muscle mass, and water levels. It plays music for you while you stand there for your scan and it scans all of your limbs. When it is finished, it prints our your body composition analysis and you can see exactly what your week entailed. Nice and neat on one little sheet.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JpAc-4v19y0/UeepHou7IJI/AAAAAAAAAyg/pNA7WV9qgnY/s1600/VIVE+InBody+scan+weight+loss+salt+lake+city.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JpAc-4v19y0/UeepHou7IJI/AAAAAAAAAyg/pNA7WV9qgnY/s400/VIVE+InBody+scan+weight+loss+salt+lake+city.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
What is so great about the InBody scan is that it can totally make me feel better than just the scale can. For example, on one of my weeks where I knew I had done so good staying on track, I had only lost 1.5 lbs (which is still great but I was hoping for a bit more). But with the InBody scan, my VIVE coach was able to point out that while the scale only reflected 1.5 lbs, I had actually lost 3.5 lbs of fat that week and gained almost 2 lbs of muscle and some water. All of a sudden, I felt much better about that 1.5 lbs on the scale.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-on_Gol66dMM/UeepIbLCbMI/AAAAAAAAAzA/1oyCxpjtlb0/s1600/VIVE+weight+loss+InBody+Scan+Elase+Medical+Spas+Draper.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-on_Gol66dMM/UeepIbLCbMI/AAAAAAAAAzA/1oyCxpjtlb0/s400/VIVE+weight+loss+InBody+Scan+Elase+Medical+Spas+Draper.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
So each week, I meet with her and she does the scan, talks to me about my concerns and my progress that week and measures me. We talk about all sorts of things from how I am feeling, my slip-ups that week, ways to stay on track, things coming up the following week, etc. I love talking to Brittney. She is so nice yet keeps me on track and keeps me accountable in the areas that I might start to slack. I track everything in the binder she gave me including my meal tracking, scans and weekly lessons.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-riYVvJ_5k2k/UeepJVVvSHI/AAAAAAAAAzQ/fguJzNWWYGk/s1600/VIVE+weight+loss+folder+Elase+medical+spas+salt+lake+city+utah.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-riYVvJ_5k2k/UeepJVVvSHI/AAAAAAAAAzQ/fguJzNWWYGk/s400/VIVE+weight+loss+folder+Elase+medical+spas+salt+lake+city+utah.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
I am excited to be doing the VIVE program and I feel so much better than I have in a long time. I am looking forward to seeing where I am at after I finish the whole program. My husband's 40th birthday is in November and my goal is to lose 40 lbs. by then. 20.2 lbs down, 19.9 to go. This is going to be awesome!<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Full disclosure: While I am privileged to work with Elase and they let me try the VIVE program for a week, I have chosen to continue it on my own. My opinions and results are all my own.</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04513445437784228589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3705949321191918163.post-61378083822516127282013-08-26T22:36:00.000-07:002013-08-26T22:36:11.611-07:00Back to School Free Printable: Getting to Know Your Teacher<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We are back to school this week. How about you? Every year brings the stress of what class my kids are going to be in and if they are going to be able to thrive in their new classroom. I always hope and pray my kids get teachers that will get to know them, appreciate their strengths, love their quirks, work well with their personalities and take the time to help them learn in their own way so that we can all have a good year. It's a tall order, believe me, I know. Hopefully the things we do throughout the year let them know how much we truly appreciate what they do every single day.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p4p1CBb0BhQ/Uhw2bGoUBRI/AAAAAAAAA4U/rOP0IhSdTIM/s1600/back+to+school+notes+the+gilded+pear.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p4p1CBb0BhQ/Uhw2bGoUBRI/AAAAAAAAA4U/rOP0IhSdTIM/s1600/back+to+school+notes+the+gilded+pear.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">Kohl's has THE cutest set of Curious George cards right now that are perfect for a little note to the teacher. </span></div>
This year, I wanted to get to know more about the teachers that my kids will be spending half of their waking hours with. The few minutes you get with them at the back to school night definitely isn't enough time. In hopes of getting to know them better, I decided to make a little questionnaire so that we could find out a few of their favorite things. I also hope it helps us get them things that will be most useful for them rather than generic teacher gifts throughout the year.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-trsssg-o7dk/Uhw2bHziC0I/AAAAAAAAA4Y/xO17MrfcLyw/s1600/back+to+school+getting+to+know+your+teacher+questionnaire+free+printable.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-trsssg-o7dk/Uhw2bHziC0I/AAAAAAAAA4Y/xO17MrfcLyw/s1600/back+to+school+getting+to+know+your+teacher+questionnaire+free+printable.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We attached the getting to know you questionnaire to a bag full of Kleenex, Lysol wipes and Bandaids and hope to learn a bit more about the things their new teachers love. After all, they are about to get to know my kids really well, we should learn a few things about them too!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: start;">Mr. L started 3rd grade and Miss K is chomping at the bit to start 1st grade tomorrow. It is going to be a great year with great teachers! I can just feel it. </span></div>

Especially after trying so hard to hide it from everyone for so long. I wasn't sure what to expect when I hit publish on <a href="http://www.thegildedpear.blogspot.com/2013/06/did-someone-say-manbeard.html" target="_blank">that manbeard post</a>. I tend to laugh when I am nervous and I am so glad that you could all laugh about it with me!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jPPRUX8GwGE/UeySdfibHDI/AAAAAAAAA3o/g75hvYHmsHc/s1600/manbeard+laser+hair+removal+elase+medical+spas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jPPRUX8GwGE/UeySdfibHDI/AAAAAAAAA3o/g75hvYHmsHc/s640/manbeard+laser+hair+removal+elase+medical+spas.jpg" width="425" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zuRJhlO5JUs/UeyQVeXLFoI/AAAAAAAAA3Q/iSGVBclHvvA/s1600/DSC_4577.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zuRJhlO5JUs/UeyQVeXLFoI/AAAAAAAAA3Q/iSGVBclHvvA/s1600/DSC_4577.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uqLAXEjDEXE/UeelEGAXERI/AAAAAAAAAxU/MlGfiJe-8FI/s1600/laser+hair+removal+elase+draper+salt+lake+city.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uqLAXEjDEXE/UeelEGAXERI/AAAAAAAAAxU/MlGfiJe-8FI/s1600/laser+hair+removal+elase+draper+salt+lake+city.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br /> </a><br />
I am just so excited to be doing the laser hair removal for this manbeard of mine that I could squeal {insert squeal}. I had another laser hair treatment over at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ElaseMedicalSpas" target="_blank">Elase</a> and am definitely feeling a difference in the manbeard. While is it still patchy, the hairs definitely feel thinner and finer and less pokey. I find myself shaving much less and even when I do, it is in fewer and more random places than I had to before. In this case, maybe more patchy is a good thing!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uqLAXEjDEXE/UeelEGAXERI/AAAAAAAAAxU/MlGfiJe-8FI/s1600/laser+hair+removal+elase+draper+salt+lake+city.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uqLAXEjDEXE/UeelEGAXERI/AAAAAAAAAxU/MlGfiJe-8FI/s1600/laser+hair+removal+elase+draper+salt+lake+city.jpg" /></a></div>
Again, my appointment was literally less than five minutes. You really are just in and out. I was running errands and didn't have time for Dr. Numb to set in so this time around I definitely felt the heat a bit more. But it was nothing uncomfortable. It is so fast and with the cool air blowing on you, it didn't seem bad at all. After it is finished, it is a tiny bit red but it quickly goes away and you can put aloe vera on it if you want to.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-we-lmPSic7o/UeelEFhM2gI/AAAAAAAAAxM/6hra-IHxPoI/s1600/after+laser+hair+removal+elase+in+draper.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-we-lmPSic7o/UeelEFhM2gI/AAAAAAAAAxM/6hra-IHxPoI/s1600/after+laser+hair+removal+elase+in+draper.jpg" /></a></div>
After two treatments, I am definitely noticing a difference. My manbeard isn't gone but it is already a definite improvement. The ladies at Elase do a great job and are so nice and welcoming every single time I go in. So excited to be getting rid of this unwanted hair and I think I will move on to my armpits next!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

To make the cut little bag above, you will need a decorative treat bag (which can be found at almost any party or craft store), some decorative tape, your treats of course and then simply download the free printable <a href="https://app.box.com/s/a8k03a62i0mk00glys6u" target="_blank">here</a>. Print it out on label paper to make a great sticker version.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04513445437784228589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3705949321191918163.post-86282553734382267062013-07-19T23:46:00.002-07:002013-07-19T23:46:39.290-07:00A Love of Soccer<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Miss K told us last year that she wanted to play soccer (one thing on her long list of sports she asked us to sign her up for). In fact, when she saw a pair of soccer cleats on the clearance rack at Target last year, she begged and begged me to get them for her and so I did, a size bigger so they would fit when the season started.<br />

This is the thing, Miss K LOVES soccer! She practices and practices in the back yard. Loves her uniform and intently listens to every. single. word the coach tells her. She loves it. Not to mention, she is good at it! So good! </div>

And guess what? I love it too! There is something so fun about watching her and cheering on her and her team. When she scores a goal and runs out of the game to give us a high-five, it is the best moment ever! It is so much fun watching her do something she absolutely loves.<br />

Miss K cried when the season ended. We told her we would sign her up again and she cried again because she wants the same team, the same coach and the same jersey for next season. She is so awesome and I am certain that one day she will thoroughly enjoy just that season after season after season.<br />

I'd like to thank my hormones, PCOS and all of those years wading through infertility and trying to balance my hormones out for making it what it is today.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
If you didn't know about my manbeard it is because I try my very best to keep it tamed, plucked, waxed, and shaven. I don't normally talk about it because, well, I feel much less myself with my manbeard and I love feeling cute and feminine. My manbeard definitely hinders that.<br />
<br />
I really don't like to share my manbeard with anyone, I'd rather prefer hibernating if I had to let it grow but I also wanted you to be able to see what I deal with every single day. Unfortunately I have to much to do and too many people to see to actually let it grow (ain't nobody got time for that!), so this will have to do.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-f6yd58ZJeOw/UctFGkFNcmI/AAAAAAAAAvE/oUA-9Z6vP7I/s1600/DSC_4692.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-f6yd58ZJeOw/UctFGkFNcmI/AAAAAAAAAvE/oUA-9Z6vP7I/s1600/DSC_4692.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-u2Kz0EApCDs/UctFGa7ddBI/AAAAAAAAAvI/ixqDBJXKcro/s1600/DSC_4680.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-u2Kz0EApCDs/UctFGa7ddBI/AAAAAAAAAvI/ixqDBJXKcro/s1600/DSC_4680.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">(While it seems like a nice, thick beard, in actuality, it is much more patchy in real life and not quite as funny! ;-)</span></div>
<br />
My manbeard has gotten so out of control the last few years that I even made a deal with my husband that when I got old and couldn't take care of myself that he would ensure the manbeard was taken care of.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
That was until I was introduced to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ElaseMedicalSpas?fref=ts" target="_blank">Elase Medical Spas</a> and realized I should have been bargaining for laser hair removal instead. After all of the horror stories I have heard about, I loved knowing that all of their estheticians are highly trained and extremely knowledgeable, not to mention so friendly! I love that Elase has the feel of a spa but is as clean as a doctor's office too (so important to me!). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Arld1HRBFZg/UbjvMUp3stI/AAAAAAAAAuk/ahQS-pbEPjI/s1600/elase+medical+spas+draper.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Arld1HRBFZg/UbjvMUp3stI/AAAAAAAAAuk/ahQS-pbEPjI/s1600/elase+medical+spas+draper.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
I also didn't realize how reasonably priced laser hair removal really is at Elase. They have reasonable plans starting as low as $35/month and it is 70%-90% effective after a series of 8 to 12 treatments. Why haven't I done this sooner?<br />
<br />
I went into Elase for my first laser hair removal appointment wondering what it would be like. I had heard all sorts of stories about laser hair removal and how painful it could be. So, I put on some Dr. Numb and headed out the door.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Mary Kate was as excited as I was to help me get rid of my manbeard!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WS_9cLcx0is/UbjvMzZeNbI/AAAAAAAAAuo/bx2b3I2y6Ag/s1600/laser+hair+removal+salt+lake.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WS_9cLcx0is/UbjvMzZeNbI/AAAAAAAAAuo/bx2b3I2y6Ag/s1600/laser+hair+removal+salt+lake.jpg" /></a></div>
I was pleasantly surprised with how quick it was and how comfortable it was. I loved the cool air blowing in my face through the entire thing and was literally done in less than five minutes. The best five minutes that I will ever spend every month for sure!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wG6mGBeCR14/UbjvMc4Y45I/AAAAAAAAAug/j42KMLLL6tQ/s1600/laser+hair+removal+draper.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wG6mGBeCR14/UbjvMc4Y45I/AAAAAAAAAug/j42KMLLL6tQ/s1600/laser+hair+removal+draper.jpg" /></a></div>
With each treatment, you should see an average of 20 to 30% less re-growth. After my first two treatments, I can definitely tell the manbeard is coming in a bit thinner. I cannot wait until it is basically non-existent.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04513445437784228589noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3705949321191918163.post-51243663590758080162013-06-26T14:36:00.001-07:002013-06-26T14:41:08.474-07:00Zombie Mom WednesdaysWith a late work night on Tuesday night, Wednesday's have become livingly referred to as "Zombie Mom Wednesday" around our house. So, if I am walking around more zombie like, check your calendar, it is more than likely a Wednesday.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--kXMvnK_b2g/UctboBnr4_I/AAAAAAAAAwk/kF9UbE42c7w/s1600/DSC_4798.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--kXMvnK_b2g/UctboBnr4_I/AAAAAAAAAwk/kF9UbE42c7w/s1600/DSC_4798.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">(Do you really all have to wake up the minute the sun is awake? Sigh.)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If I have gotten 5 hours of sleep on a Tuesday night, it is a good week. Needless to say, our Wednesday mornings are Rough (with a capital R!). I am not sure if there is ever a zombie mom at your house but our zombie mom isn't a morning person to begin with. She sets the alarm clock for the very last minute possible to get the kids to school on-time. She is usually in her pajamas with a hat on to hide the crazy bedhead and has not even brushed her teeth. The kids clothes are usually a little more wrinkled and a little more mismatched. It isn't important if the shoes are on the wrong feet or if the homework is in their backpacks. What is important is that zombie mom is here to give them a kiss and send them off to school (hopefully we make it by that last bell!).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1mGer7mLn98/UctboAn8LjI/AAAAAAAAAwo/HXktr_BpMzg/s1600/DSC_4754.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1mGer7mLn98/UctboAn8LjI/AAAAAAAAAwo/HXktr_BpMzg/s1600/DSC_4754.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">(Just one more minute, I am sure it will make all the difference! Zzzzzzzzzz!)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What is the zombie mom to do with the one little adorable guy that doesn't have school? Maintain survival mode, that's what! Survival mode usually entails milk and breakfast cuddling with the zombie mom with Netflix (sometime in my bed on the kindle) because who am I kidding, I cannot live on 5 hours of sleep! No one benefits, believe me! With Curious George and Phineas & Ferb's help I am sure to get another hour or so of zombie mom sleep time (totally different than normal sleep because it is half sleeping, but in zombie mom state, I'll take it) .</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Sbp-kg8gONE/UctboLNqNKI/AAAAAAAAAws/d8gvnx5VzlY/s1600/DSC_4793.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Sbp-kg8gONE/UctboLNqNKI/AAAAAAAAAws/d8gvnx5VzlY/s1600/DSC_4793.jpg" /></a></div>
For all of you who have crazy work schedules, have their most productive hours after the kids are in bed, have kids waking them up all night long, enjoy the peace and quiet at night or are just night owls in general for that matter, let's not feel so guilty about needing the help of Curious George and Phineas & Ferb. They come highly recommended. Now, if only they could make breakfast too.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04513445437784228589noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3705949321191918163.post-3140506063057047182013-06-20T14:06:00.000-07:002013-07-16T16:59:29.261-07:00Teacher Appreciation Gift: Free PrintableIt feels like almost everyone on the planet is out of school already except for our school which is year-round. So, this is for all of my friends and neighbors that are still looking for the perfect teacher appreciation gift. Don't fret, I have an easy gift with a free-printable just for you.<br />
<br />
Remember <a href="http://thegildedpear.blogspot.com/2012/05/get-crafty-repurposed-drink-hold.html" target="_blank">this tutorial</a> on a drink holder flower container? It really is just to cute to not make over and over again.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3Cnil2FS7C8/UctZ5WL3__I/AAAAAAAAAv4/BIUoPA6bRVQ/s1600/teacher+appreciation+gift+idea+free+printable.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3Cnil2FS7C8/UctZ5WL3__I/AAAAAAAAAv4/BIUoPA6bRVQ/s640/teacher+appreciation+gift+idea+free+printable.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
My kids absolutely love picking out flowers, especially when I tell them to pick out enough to fill this container. Then we added a hand written note from me and the kids. We mixed it up with a little pick that says, "Thank you for helping me learn and grow this year" and glued the free printable tag to a popsicle stick and stuck it in one of the plants.<br />
<br />
It really is such a quick and easy teacher appreciation gift for the end of the year. And it is pretty adorable too.<br />

My goals included eating better, exercising, laying off the Diet Coke (gasp!), and getting my crazy hormones under control.<br />
<br />
I started off the year doing good at eating better and exercising and had to work my way up to the Diet Coke (just for the record, I am going on 5 weeks without one and I am still alive!) and then those pesky hormones are always on the list (thank you PCOS!).<br />

When I had the opportunity to tour Elase Medical Spa in Draper as a brand ambassador, I thought I would check into exactly what it was they had to offer before the tour. I had never heard of a medical spa before and while I knew they did laser hair removal, I didn't know much beyond that.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My vision of facials, massages & pedicures was far from true. That isn't what they do at all. I was so excited to see that they offer laser hair removal, bio-identical hormone therapy, skin rejuvenation and weight loss. They also offer botox, fillers and cosmetic surgery.<br />

What I didn't know that day was how truly wonderful Elase is. With a million things going on and my stress at an all time high, it is always refreshing to go into Elase and have them make me feel fabulous the minute I walk in the door. It is so relaxing and the medical staff at Elase Draper is so friendly. So much so that I really just want to hang out with them all day every time I go in for an appointment!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I met with them for a consult and was surprised at how reasonable their prices were, especially with their affordable membership packages. They also offer discounts which are easy to find out about through <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ElaseMedicalSpas?fref=ts" target="_blank">their Facebook page</a>. </div>

After spending some time at Elase, I decided to do laser hair removal (goodbye, manbeard), bio-identical hormone therapy (help me hormones!), and VIVE weight loss (come on healthy weight). Some of those things can get a bit personal but they have been fantastic and as Brittney reminded me, "It is never to late to start taking care of you." I would definitely say this is a great start to taking care of me and I look forward to sharing my journey all along the way. Starting with laser hair removal for that manbeard of mine!<br />

<span style="font-size: xx-small;">Disclaimer: While Elase Medical Spas is providing treatments in exchange for sharing my experiences and opinions regarding the services they provide, my opinions are all my own. I think taking better care of myself is something I should have done a long time ago. Now is a great time to start and I am grateful I can do it at Elase!</span></div>

I was lucky enough to be a part of the <a href="http://snapconference.com/" target="_blank">SNAP conference</a> at Thanksgiving Point this year. The R House Couture was one of the sponsors of the event and provided all of the attendees with a custom "create joy" piece designed especially for the SNAP! attendees.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c20dI4Il0LQ/UbU7wpOw9HI/AAAAAAAAAqg/uPdSoY9-07o/s1600/snap+conference+thanksgiving+point.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c20dI4Il0LQ/UbU7wpOw9HI/AAAAAAAAAqg/uPdSoY9-07o/s400/snap+conference+thanksgiving+point.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I enjoyed the long weekend at Thanksgiving Point, loved spending time with my friends and fellow bloggers, loved meeting new friends and learned so many new things from the classes. What a fun conference it was.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cQlCrnfn8RU/UbU7whHWpQI/AAAAAAAAAqo/nUzxyhkaHXg/s1600/snap+conference+the+r+house+couture.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cQlCrnfn8RU/UbU7whHWpQI/AAAAAAAAAqo/nUzxyhkaHXg/s400/snap+conference+the+r+house+couture.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
We were so busy getting the necklaces ready for all of the attendees and our booth ready for <a href="http://www.thequeenbeemarket.com/" target="_blank">Queen Bee Market</a> that I didn't really take pictures of the actual event (utter fail).<br />
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Lucky for you, I have hilarious outtakes of the photo shoot we had for the brochure we included with our necklace. These really do sum us up and remind me how fortunate I am to co-own <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/therhouse" target="_blank">The R House Couture</a> & <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/spottedowlsoaps" target="_blank">Spotted Owl Soap</a> with two of my best friends. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Sometimes I need a few more minutes to be ready (and for someone to fix my shirt!). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-s0aChhisXQ4/Ua-uDoMSkzI/AAAAAAAAAn8/3GJyJzcmJPw/s1600/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-s0aChhisXQ4/Ua-uDoMSkzI/AAAAAAAAAn8/3GJyJzcmJPw/s400/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_11.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Sometimes people steal each others tools. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HngPp-noifU/Ua-uDvSu5xI/AAAAAAAAAoM/bwEpHM4drQ4/s1600/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HngPp-noifU/Ua-uDvSu5xI/AAAAAAAAAoM/bwEpHM4drQ4/s400/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_12.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And sometimes things get a little crazy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fzqCmrncdUA/Ua-uE2H3tsI/AAAAAAAAAok/Br1Yw85IaC0/s1600/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fzqCmrncdUA/Ua-uE2H3tsI/AAAAAAAAAok/Br1Yw85IaC0/s400/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_17.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Sometimes we tease each other like sisters.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Yt8xyCin1IA/Ua-uFvN2lpI/AAAAAAAAApA/GCOmc0eAeeA/s1600/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="display: inline !important; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Yt8xyCin1IA/Ua-uFvN2lpI/AAAAAAAAApA/GCOmc0eAeeA/s400/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_5.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Sometimes we are very serious and just have to get down to business.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aIvsAmI8HIQ/Ua-uEa6XP8I/AAAAAAAAAoU/LUowB0ECC2Y/s1600/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="257" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aIvsAmI8HIQ/Ua-uEa6XP8I/AAAAAAAAAoU/LUowB0ECC2Y/s400/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_16.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
No matter what, we work well together and do whatever we can to help each other out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NfrludLGNNY/Ua-uEE7HxcI/AAAAAAAAAoQ/mJzaWMGuVnE/s1600/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NfrludLGNNY/Ua-uEE7HxcI/AAAAAAAAAoQ/mJzaWMGuVnE/s400/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_15.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We always have so much to share with each other that our agenda includes an "other" section just for important updates in our lives (we can't let the business talk completely take over ;).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qkWNpsQACa8/Ua-uE7el8mI/AAAAAAAAAoo/ccG_noVjQiA/s1600/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qkWNpsQACa8/Ua-uE7el8mI/AAAAAAAAAoo/ccG_noVjQiA/s400/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And we laugh. A lot. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZFbU7Hzqj24/Ua-uF1xobRI/AAAAAAAAAo8/pCukVjJDR1k/s1600/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZFbU7Hzqj24/Ua-uF1xobRI/AAAAAAAAAo8/pCukVjJDR1k/s400/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_6.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In fact, sometimes I laugh so hard I cry and have to leave the workshop just so I can breathe.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jO_Fu4CEGJQ/Ua-uFBXqaNI/AAAAAAAAAow/Rl_nnnmPvS4/s1600/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_20.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="270" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jO_Fu4CEGJQ/Ua-uFBXqaNI/AAAAAAAAAow/Rl_nnnmPvS4/s400/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_20.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We work really hard behind the scenes to coordinate all aspects of our businesses and still have fun together as friends.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zaoaT1vfTxE/Ua-uFjVsC-I/AAAAAAAAApM/Z61igQBkodM/s1600/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_26.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zaoaT1vfTxE/Ua-uFjVsC-I/AAAAAAAAApM/Z61igQBkodM/s400/The+R+House+Couture+and+SNAP%2521_26.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Who would have thought 5 years ago when we put one little necklace on Etsy during our craft night that we would be doing the things we are today. Life is amazing and so are my friends (errr, I mean business partners, <a href="http://www.kimorlandini.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Kim</a> & <a href="http://www.therhouse.com/" target="_blank">Lindsey</a>). Love you ladies!</div>

When I chose my theme it seemed to fit so well with my goals for the year. I knew it was perfect because while I know what I need to do, it can't just happen all on its own (granted sometimes it is nice to wait around and hope it could! lol) I need that reminder to take that next step and do whatever I can do to reach my goals. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XkF3RoRJTOA/UaLnFl5nxgI/AAAAAAAAAj4/rAxAh9FPTxA/s1600/make+it+happen+the+r+house+couture.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XkF3RoRJTOA/UaLnFl5nxgI/AAAAAAAAAj4/rAxAh9FPTxA/s400/make+it+happen+the+r+house+couture.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">My motto in sterling silver. You can purchase it <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/127128344/make-it-happen-necklace-make-it-happen?ref=shop_home_active&ga_search_query=make%2Bit%2Bhappen" target="_blank">here</a>. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
Five months into the year so many things have happened that have nothing to do with the goals I had in mind from the beginning of the year. In fact they are things that have to come first before anything else. Yet all along the way I am reminding myself how my theme is the perfect reminder that I can follow my gutt and do what I know is best for my kids and for my family and I can make it happen regardless of what others think should happen! After all, being proactive feels better than waiting to see what someone else will do.<br />
<br />
I am making things happen all over the place and although at times we are taking tiny baby steps, we are still making progress. So while it sometimes feels like all of my time and energy are focused on one guy around here, it is a good reminder that making it happen doesn't need to be one giant leap or one certain thing at a time. As long as we are headed in that direction and keeping it in mind, we are making progress.<br />
<br />
We are having a great year of making things happening and celebrating all along the way. How about you? Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04513445437784228589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3705949321191918163.post-91335209770108844992013-05-10T13:04:00.000-07:002013-05-10T13:05:10.928-07:00Celebrating Growth This Mother's DayMother's Day is right around the corner and every year it brings me a heart full of gratitude and love for three women who made it possible for me to be a mother (we love you all more than you realize!). The three littles running around here are the best part of my life (next to The Gent of course). And they make me a better person every single day. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rWBF6I3OXHY/UY1Q5trzK8I/AAAAAAAAAi8/CSdQXBS6OFg/s1600/DSC_3618.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rWBF6I3OXHY/UY1Q5trzK8I/AAAAAAAAAi8/CSdQXBS6OFg/s400/DSC_3618.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
This year Mother's Day is extra special because it marks the two year anniversary of meeting Mr. D for the first time. It all happened so fast. We found out about Mr. D one morning, were chosen by his birth mother that afternoon and left to get him the next. When we got to Arizona, the day couldn't go by fast enough. After what seemed like a 99 hour day of waiting, we finally got the OK to go and get him (around 8 p.m. which felt like one of the longest days of my life! lol) We walked into the nanny's house and I looked into those big brown eyes of his and fell in love with him immediately. He and The Gent had an instant connection. Watching them in those first few minutes together is a moment I will forever cherish as all of my fears of adopting an "older" child diminished.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-enATt5q3TV0/UY1Q6t3DdmI/AAAAAAAAAjI/1cyU0f92-aM/s1600/DSC_3685.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-enATt5q3TV0/UY1Q6t3DdmI/AAAAAAAAAjI/1cyU0f92-aM/s400/DSC_3685.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
Mr. D was 17 months old at the time and he was timid and quiet. He would quietly whimper in the corner when he needed something. When things were loud, he would hide and when people came towards him he would shudder. If he was tired, he would find somewhere to lay and go to sleep. He ate whatever was put in front of him and he rarely made a peep.<br />
<br />
In our family we are silly, we are sarcastic, we are loud, we like to goof around and pillow fights are a staple around here. Our kids are energetic and opinionated. We turn the music up way too loud and dance while we clean. Basically, we can be crazy. I can only imagine what Mr. D was thinking once he got home.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ipl7cR3aXgs/UY1Q5vJFhmI/AAAAAAAAAjA/1b3kC6f6YLQ/s1600/DSC_3664.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ipl7cR3aXgs/UY1Q5vJFhmI/AAAAAAAAAjA/1b3kC6f6YLQ/s400/DSC_3664.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
We had to teach Mr. D a lot of things. The biggest thing was that he could trust us, that we were going to help him with whatever he needed. We had to teach him that playing, bathtime and bedtime weren't things to be afraid of. We had to let him know when we were being sarcastic and when we were serious. We had to teach him that we weren't going to leave him and that if we did, even just to go to dinner, that we would always come back. We had to teach him that he could have an opinion, that he could tell us what he wanted or what he needed. That he could have a voice.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Xa1Y7br1yIg/UY1Q6fDfYuI/AAAAAAAAAjE/vc79ZH9NFlc/s1600/DSC_3684.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Xa1Y7br1yIg/UY1Q6fDfYuI/AAAAAAAAAjE/vc79ZH9NFlc/s400/DSC_3684.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
I will never forget the first day he spoke up. I made all of the kids chicken nuggets for lunch, put them on the table, got all of the kids inside and we started to eat lunch. Mr. D, who from the moment we got him ate whatever was put in front of him, just sat there. At first I wasn't quite sure why. And then he whispered "I don't want chicken nuggets."<br />
<br />
It was so quiet, I wondered if I had even heard him right. So I asked him what he had said. His big brown eyes dropped and he shrugged his shoulders and picked up a chicken nugget. I was not about to let him eat chicken nuggets if he was actually going to speak up. And so I asked, "did you say that you don't want chicken nuggets?" He peeked up at me and hesitantly and quietly said, "yes, I don't want chicken nuggets." So I asked him what he wanted. He shrugged again, not sure that he should even say it. I couldn't just let it go because this was huge! So, I asked him what he would prefer instead. He shrugged his shoulders again and said, "a peanut butter sandwich?" You got it, dude! A peanut butter sandwich it is!<br />
<br />
We have come a long way since that peanut butter sandwich. As I read <a href="http://www.adoptivefamilies.com/articles.php?aid=2439" target="_blank">this</a> article, it completely resonated with me and reminded me just how far we've come in the last two years. I cried, I laughed, and it brought a smile to my face as I watched Mr. D jumping off the couch onto the pile of pillows he had created all while screaming and squealing and making the best sound effects one could ever imagine.<br />

I am so glad you have found your voice Mr. D! Although I will still remind you what an inside voice should be like, it will always make me proud when I overhear you negotiating a show with your older brother or telling your sister how you want to play house and I even get a kick out of it when you tell me you aren't ready to go to bed. Because, you should never be afraid to voice your opinion, share your thoughts, and most importantly ever feel like you are facing this world alone. Love you, Mr. D! So glad you are a part of our family.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04513445437784228589noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3705949321191918163.post-40416647258051469102013-03-13T02:00:00.000-07:002013-03-13T02:00:01.016-07:00Born Brave: Giveaway A few months ago, I was privileged to get to spend an evening with my friends <a href="http://www.kimorlandini.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Kim</a>, <a href="http://www.therhouse.com/" target="_blank">Lindsey</a>, Mollz and Cammi. We went to dinner and headed over to a beautiful house in the avenues where we were going to be able to spend a night with Katherine Nelson listening to some of the songs from her new album, Born Brave. Little did we know what we really had in store.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LFdGTzAx-Qw/UT6u4vczNJI/AAAAAAAAAiQ/SlEKk2j2aMQ/s1600/IMG_20121009_192123-01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LFdGTzAx-Qw/UT6u4vczNJI/AAAAAAAAAiQ/SlEKk2j2aMQ/s320/IMG_20121009_192123-01.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
It was an intimate night with a few dozen people and we knew we would have a great time (afterall, we were all together!). While I didn't know much about Katherine Nelson, I could tell from the moment I met her that she has a huge heart. So welcoming and kind. What I didn't know what an emotional night we were all about to experience.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-u5tEwU0NP5M/UT6u5YUnZnI/AAAAAAAAAiY/bZXMf1tvHRs/s1600/IMG_20121009_193412-01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-u5tEwU0NP5M/UT6u5YUnZnI/AAAAAAAAAiY/bZXMf1tvHRs/s320/IMG_20121009_193412-01.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">(Mollz, Cammi & Lindsey enjoying the night)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
Katherine sang a few songs and then we never saw the next song coming. She said it was about adoption. Kim and I were sitting next to each other and grabbed each others hand. We were three feet from Katherine and right across the coffee table from Lindsey, Mollz and Cammi. My eyes caught Lindsey's, and without saying a word we said, if we could have a group hug, now would be the time.</div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7sLFwh1SCQI/UT6u5jEYXZI/AAAAAAAAAik/xE7f6U2V4OM/s1600/IMG_20121009_194228-01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7sLFwh1SCQI/UT6u5jEYXZI/AAAAAAAAAik/xE7f6U2V4OM/s320/IMG_20121009_194228-01.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
How in the world did Katherine know? I am sure she didn't know about any of our adoption connections, especially not the impact of that night for Lindsey & Cammi. (you can read about Lindsey and Cammi's adoption connection over on her blog including that night <a href="http://www.therhouse.com/?s=cammi" target="_blank">here</a>). We sat and bawled. All five of us because of this song.<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/dhMfQVBpoSY" width="640"></iframe><br />
It was amazing. It hit us all to the core and it couldn't be more perfect that night. In all of our adoptions, the courage of their birth mothers is indescribable to me and in the moments as they were going home after placement, all I wanted to do was run after their birth moms and hug them a little tighter, a little longer and tell them just how brave I knew they were. So, not only do I love What's Mine is Yours, but I also love Born Brave.<br />
<br />
So that one of you can enjoy the entire album too, Katherine's label has been kind enough to let me give away a Born Brave CD. Enter below. This giveaway closes March, 17th @ midnight MST.<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TFu3JC6TDTU/UT5YBN0RHJI/AAAAAAAAAgw/KiKw3oHmAPk/s1600/DSC_1867.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TFu3JC6TDTU/UT5YBN0RHJI/AAAAAAAAAgw/KiKw3oHmAPk/s400/DSC_1867.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
We decided it was time to start a chore chart and allow the kids to earn allowance. Keeping the house clean and getting everything done sometimes seems like an impossible task. I have always enlisted the help of my kids because, well, for starters, they create the biggest messes around here. Shouldn't that mean that they automatically need to help?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lRqM8wPsKys/UT5V4tqsW3I/AAAAAAAAAgU/jn2nr25ZpYk/s1600/DSC_1990.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lRqM8wPsKys/UT5V4tqsW3I/AAAAAAAAAgU/jn2nr25ZpYk/s400/DSC_1990.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">(This is what my family room looks like on a regular basis, Welcome!)</span></div>
Up until now, I have taken that exact approach. We all need to help and I'd love to do that for you if you can do this for me, or we can all have fun together if we work together first. It seemed like a good system but we wanted to change it up for a few reasons:<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1) <i>To help the kids learn to manage money and save.</i></div>
<div>
We all work hard for the money we earn and for the things that we have. Our nice warm house, the fun-filled yard, the toys, the games, the clothes (including the coveted shoes which are Mr. D's favorite)...they didn't just show up here one day, although it is easy to forget that sometimes. </div>
<div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FAH62mwGDYI/UT5V3eV19zI/AAAAAAAAAfk/oEL4YQuOwLA/s1600/DSC_1882.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FAH62mwGDYI/UT5V3eV19zI/AAAAAAAAAfk/oEL4YQuOwLA/s400/DSC_1882.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
2)<i> To let the kids earn money to buy the things they are constantly asking for.</i> </div>
<div>
Every trip to the store, every outing, everywhere! This is hard for me because I want to give them everything they want. But, what am I teaching them in doing that? My new motto is "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should" (I thank my neighbor for that one).</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3) <i>To be more responsible for their own actions and things.</i> </div>
<div>
Heaven knows how many things I have spent money on to find it broken on the floor, not put away, thrown outside, etc. My hope is that when they have worked hard and saved for something great, they will appreciate it and take care of it more.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SGwaD57rB64/UT5V3lNOuAI/AAAAAAAAAgg/YX7cCrWmmIg/s1600/DSC_1889.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SGwaD57rB64/UT5V3lNOuAI/AAAAAAAAAgg/YX7cCrWmmIg/s400/DSC_1889.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
4) <i>To help them be more kind, respectful and appreciative.</i></div>
<div>
My favorite part of the chore chart for sure is the very last row where I included "I Can Be Kind & Respectful." Mainly because I feel like a broken record around here sometimes. By the fourth or fifth time dealing with the same situation, listening to them fight and talking back, all I want to do is scream and send them all to their rooms. I find the greatest solace (maybe too much) in not saying anything at all, walking over and getting the marker and giving them a frowny face on their chart. Nothing needs to be said...they already know that means business.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-icGym-3ZPV8/UT5V39958dI/AAAAAAAAAf0/Lc8jkaZyqlk/s1600/DSC_1903.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-icGym-3ZPV8/UT5V39958dI/AAAAAAAAAf0/Lc8jkaZyqlk/s400/DSC_1903.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
The chore chart is great on its own. But what about payday? For us, Payday is every Saturday. We get all of the chores done for the day and then I lay out all of the money they could have earned. That's right! All of the money they <i>could</i> have earned. I count up their chores while they patiently wait. And then I pay them from the pile they could be getting. What they didn't earn, I put back in my wallet right then.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eEbZJV0MyrY/UT5YBGheLcI/AAAAAAAAAg0/0oT4TXPaf1A/s1600/DSC_1858.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eEbZJV0MyrY/UT5YBGheLcI/AAAAAAAAAg0/0oT4TXPaf1A/s400/DSC_1858.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
<br />
I tend to hear a lot of "NOT Fair!" "I want that!" and "Why do you get to keep that?" which leads to the same discussion every week. If you were to do your chores every day and mark them all off, I would simply hand it over and wouldn't keep any of it. You could have earned THAT much money (a huge pile in their eyes, especially when the whole pile is in $1 bills).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
That was put to the test one week when Mr. L had saved and had earned just enough for the Lego set he was dying to have but then owed me money for fighting and being disrespectful. There were tears and I felt terrible but he also learned that a small amount can make a big difference.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DH2S8CHIgCE/UT5V4V9fnRI/AAAAAAAAAgQ/GhpD_LWGDrI/s1600/DSC_1930.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DH2S8CHIgCE/UT5V4V9fnRI/AAAAAAAAAgQ/GhpD_LWGDrI/s400/DSC_1930.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
When we originally started the chore charts, the kids would beg me to take them to the store (that money was burning a hole in their pockets!). We would spend way too much time wandering the aisles trying to find something they really wanted with the $4 they had. It was torturous for everyone. Not to mention that if I were to give them the $8 or $10 they needed to get even one of the things they wanted, the entire premise behind the chore chart would be out the window.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_dlc65OSP5Y/UT5V35a8_XI/AAAAAAAAAf8/wDA8K0hJF3I/s1600/DSC_1909.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_dlc65OSP5Y/UT5V35a8_XI/AAAAAAAAAf8/wDA8K0hJF3I/s400/DSC_1909.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
That is when "the store" came into the picture. I was <strike>being tortured</strike> patiently waiting for them to choose something when I thought, it would be so much easier for them to work for what they want if they know exactly how much it would cost and how hard they would have to work for it. I wrapped up the shopping trip and the next day, I went and picked out some Legos, Diary of a Whimpy kid, some doll accessories, Jake and The Neverland Pirates toys, some games and a few things from the dollar section as well as some gum and stickers (just to have a few smaller things as well).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dbU-pnYUUds/UT5V4Nh3hPI/AAAAAAAAAgc/tocG-JjifTk/s1600/DSC_1920.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dbU-pnYUUds/UT5V4Nh3hPI/AAAAAAAAAgc/tocG-JjifTk/s400/DSC_1920.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
We put price tags on everything and I opened a store in our china cabinet (perfect shelf because it was easy to see & still put away). The kids were so excited. Some of the things they are always begging for just waiting for them to earn them and get them out of there!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lOE-KC4OqPM/UT5V4olKoJI/AAAAAAAAAgY/dVrJy8QD7Sk/s1600/DSC_1971.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lOE-KC4OqPM/UT5V4olKoJI/AAAAAAAAAgY/dVrJy8QD7Sk/s400/DSC_1971.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-small;">(While our store gets the job done, my friend Kim, will be blogging Wednesday about her store <a href="http://www.kimorlandini.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">here</a> and you don't want to miss it! It is over-the-top and fantabulous! I mean, tiny buntings!?!?!? And a "bank" for payday! I should hire her to give ours an upgrade.)</span><br />
<br />
Back to those chore charts. They have worked like a charm. The kids are always talking about what they are working to earn and they do their chores more often, without a fight, knowing that toy or book or art supply is waiting for them in the cupboard.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IbbYxP2EODw/UT5V4eytXCI/AAAAAAAAAgI/EocpqHVH8cQ/s1600/DSC_1955.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IbbYxP2EODw/UT5V4eytXCI/AAAAAAAAAgI/EocpqHVH8cQ/s400/DSC_1955.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
It has also stopped the constant begging for things at the store. Instead it has turned into, "Do you think you can buy this for the store?" and has also started discussions like, "I can, but also know that I can get it for $5 less at the other store, do you still want me to get it here or should I wait and pick it up next time I go there?" Of course they want the best price possible because it makes it easier to earn. Fabulous lessons being learned all over the place. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
