Reading Is A Blast Bulletin Board & Free Printable

I made it into the Top 10, vote for me in the "Education Creations" category here.
I decided to enter the Scotch Make Amazing Contest with this bright and colorful bulletin board display. It is created using a lot Scotch Expressions tape, Scotch Duct Tape, Scotch Washi Tape, and my Scotch Laminator along with a few other Scotch essentials including a utility knife, scissors double sided tape and glue. I thought you would enjoy the details on how each of the pieces were created.
"Reading" is created out of tape. I printed the outlines of the letters on white cardstock and then used various colors of tape, some cut into tiny triangles and arranged in a mosaic pattern. Scotch star shaped Post-It Notes decorate the entire board.

This word took me hours to complete. I think I was dreaming of tiny triangles that night.

The top of my bulletin board display is decorated with a box of books, the box decorated in tape to look like a shuttle panel, the inside with Scotch Duct tape. The containers of pencils and bookmarks are decorated in tape as well.
I also included the Scotch doodle pad for writing down favorite books or quotes.
I designed these bookmarks and am including a link for a free printable here (for personal use only).
I printed the bookmarks and decorated the backs with Scotch tape and then sent them through my handy, dandy Scotch laminator.
The pencils are wrapped in different colors of Scotch tape.

Every rocket theme needs a countdown, so I included a countdown of the top 4th grade books. The entire bulletin board is decorated in Scotch Star Shaped Post-It Notes.

These fun little rockets were so easy to make using the Scotch tape and Scotch glue. They would make a great project for the classroom and are fun to create and decorate however you want.
The huge rocket is about 3 feet long and was created using poster board decorated in various kinds of Scotch tape.
The moon is also decorated with silver Scotch tape to add a bit of moon detail.
Every little reading nook should have a bright colored rug. The rug is made using Scotch masking tape and Duct tape. The bright colors and diagonal pattern make it fun in the space.
In the bookcase, I used Scotch Duct tape and clear packing tape to cover these magazine holders and to break up different genres of books.
I had so much fun creating all of these little projects out of tape. My kids love the little "library" in our house and never want to take it down.

Follow along on Instagram to see all of the #makeamazingcontest entries and follow @ScotchProducts to watch the final countdown on the winners. I am hoping one of them is me!

Fall Is In The Air: Free Printable

I am sitting here in my cozy sweatshirt with a blanket on my lap and the thermostat saying it is a mere 63 degrees in my house. My popsicle toes definitely thought it was cooler than that. Fall is in the air. It always creeps up on us and lets us know the crisp air and cooler weather is here to stay. I am certain the change in weather warrants some hot cocoa, fuzzy slippers and a good book. I am also certain it warrants a free printable with the best things fall has to offer. Download it here.

Teacher Appreciation Gift: Free Printable

It feels like almost everyone on the planet is out of school already except for our school which is year-round. So, this is for all of my friends and neighbors that are still looking for the perfect teacher appreciation gift. Don't fret, I have an easy gift with a free-printable just for you.

Remember this tutorial on a drink holder flower container? It really is just to cute to not make over and over again.
My kids absolutely love picking out flowers, especially when I tell them to pick out enough to fill this container. Then we added a hand written note from me and the kids. We mixed it up with a little pick that says, "Thank you for helping me learn and grow this year" and glued the free printable tag to a popsicle stick and stuck it in one of the plants.

It really is such a quick and easy teacher appreciation gift for the end of the year. And it is pretty adorable too.

Download the free printable tags here.

Chore Charts & Allowance

We decided it was time to start a chore chart and allow the kids to earn allowance. Keeping the house clean and getting everything done sometimes seems like an impossible task. I have always enlisted the help of my kids because, well, for starters, they create the biggest messes around here. Shouldn't that mean that they automatically need to help?
(This is what my family room looks like on a regular basis, Welcome!)
Up until now, I have taken that exact approach. We all need to help and I'd love to do that for you if you can do this for me, or we can all have fun together if we work together first. It seemed like a good system but we wanted to change it up for a few reasons:

1) To help the kids learn to manage money and save.
We all work hard for the money we earn and for the things that we have. Our nice warm house, the fun-filled yard, the toys, the games, the clothes (including the coveted shoes which are Mr. D's favorite)...they didn't just show up here one day, although it is easy to forget that sometimes.
2) To let the kids earn money to buy the things they are constantly asking for.
Every trip to the store, every outing, everywhere! This is hard for me because I want to give them everything they want. But, what am I teaching them in doing that? My new motto is "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should" (I thank my neighbor for that one).

3) To be more responsible for their own actions and things.
Heaven knows how many things I have spent money on to find it broken on the floor, not put away, thrown outside, etc. My hope is that when they have worked hard and saved for something great, they will appreciate it and take care of it more.
4) To help them be more kind, respectful and appreciative.
My favorite part of the chore chart for sure is the very last row where I included "I Can Be Kind & Respectful." Mainly because I feel like a broken record around here sometimes. By the fourth or fifth time dealing with the same situation, listening to them fight and talking back, all I want to do is scream and send them all to their rooms. I find the greatest solace (maybe too much) in not saying anything at all, walking over and getting the marker and giving them a frowny face on their chart. Nothing needs to be said...they already know that means business.
The chore chart is great on its own. But what about payday? For us, Payday is every Saturday. We get all of the chores done for the day and then I lay out all of the money they could have earned. That's right! All of the money they could have earned. I count up their chores while they patiently wait. And then I pay them from the pile they could be getting. What they didn't earn, I put back in my wallet right then.

I tend to hear a lot of "NOT Fair!" "I want that!" and "Why do you get to keep that?" which leads to the same discussion every week. If you were to do your chores every day and mark them all off, I would simply hand it over and wouldn't keep any of it. You could have earned THAT much money (a huge pile in their eyes, especially when the whole pile is in $1 bills).

That was put to the test one week when Mr. L had saved and had earned just enough for the Lego set he was dying to have but then owed me money for fighting and being disrespectful. There were tears and I felt terrible but he also learned that a small amount can make a big difference.
When we originally started the chore charts, the kids would beg me to take them to the store (that money was burning a hole in their pockets!). We would spend way too much time wandering the aisles trying to find something they really wanted with the $4 they had. It was torturous for everyone. Not to mention that if I were to give them the $8 or $10 they needed to get even one of the things they wanted, the entire premise behind the chore chart would be out the window.
That is when "the store" came into the picture. I was being tortured patiently waiting for them to choose something when I thought, it would be so much easier for them to work for what they want if they know exactly how much it would cost and how hard they would have to work for it. I wrapped up the shopping trip and the next day, I went and picked out some Legos, Diary of a Whimpy kid, some doll accessories, Jake and The Neverland Pirates toys, some games and a few things from the dollar section as well as some gum and stickers (just to have a few smaller things as well).
We put price tags on everything and I opened a store in our china cabinet (perfect shelf because it was easy to see & still put away). The kids were so excited. Some of the things they are always begging for just waiting for them to earn them and get them out of there!
(While our store gets the job done, my friend Kim, will be blogging Wednesday about her store here and you don't want to miss it! It is over-the-top and fantabulous! I mean, tiny buntings!?!?!? And a "bank" for payday! I should hire her to give ours an upgrade.)

Back to those chore charts. They have worked like a charm. The kids are always talking about what they are working to earn and they do their chores more often, without a fight, knowing that toy or book or art supply is waiting for them in the cupboard.
It has also stopped the constant begging for things at the store. Instead it has turned into, "Do you think you can buy this for the store?" and has also started discussions like, "I can, but also know that I can get it for $5 less at the other store, do you still want me to get it here or should I wait and pick it up next time I go there?" Of course they want the best price possible because it makes it easier to earn. Fabulous lessons being learned all over the place.
Do you want a chore chart of your own? I have free printable chore charts (three color combinations to choose from; green & blue here, purple & pink here, turquoise & red here) for you to use at home. Simply print it off (from the links above), laminate it and get your wet erase marker ready. And if you'd like a bit more info on the different sections, double click on the photo below for a larger version with explanations for each section, how we use it and some additional ideas.

Free Printable: Mother's Day

Mother's Day for me means much more than just celebrating the fact that I get to be a mom to three of the most adorable yahoos on the planet! I am blessed to have a wonderful mom, a fabulous mother-in-law and an adopted mom (not sure if I adopted her or she adopted me) and three birth moms to celebrate with on Mother's Day & Birth Mother's Day (which is the day before Mother's Day each year). Not to mention the dozens of other amazing women in my life that are such wonderful examples to me and my children. I am grateful for each of them.
Free printable here.

I am sure that I am not the only one who cannot believe it is May, let alone Mother's Day already! A little ribbon and a tag go a long way so I thought I'd share the tag I whipped up for some little gifts I am making.

Have a fabulous weekend celebrating all of the wonderful women in your lives!

Grateful Monday: Kicking it Off

sharing a free printable of this at the link below

I have always loved the idea of a gratitude journal and like to think that I am try to be a positive person and am grateful for everything that I have. But the truth is, sometimes it is refreshing to complain and I find that for me personally, venting is a good way to get over something (just ask The Gent who has always been every so patient in listening to my rants). I feel like a good philosophy is, "Talk about it for heavens sake!" And then move on. At the same time, sometimes that philosophy doesn't exactly exude a grateful attitude but I truly am grateful for everything that I have in my life and I never want to take it for granted.

While I love being a stay-at-home mom to three busy and rambuncious kids, I often find myself feeling crazy, unorganized and scatter-brained these days. I find myself looking forward to the weekends (don't we all) because I know that my husband will be home and if I am not working, he always lets me sleep in on Saturdays (he's fabulous that way!). We can tag team the trio and enjoy some family time. I feel myself dreading Mondays because it is back to the grind. Back to waking up all of the kids to take The Boy to school. Back to the normal routine. Back to the homework. Back to the schedule. Back to being the only one here for the fighting, crying and whining that inevitably ensues. Sounds like the perfect job, doesn't it! Well it is. It is fabulous and something I dreamed of for many years while climbing the corporate ladder. But when Monday comes around, I find myself in need of a boost, a little reminder of truly how blessed and lucky my life is. Regardless of what our week might entail I am sure I am not the only one who feels this way. I thought it'd be great to share those things I am most grateful for each week. So here is the start of Grateful Mondays.

I thought I would kick it off with a free printable (shown above). "Start each day with a GRATEFUL heart". It is 5x5 and ready to print. You can download it here. I am going to be putting mine on my nightstand because I tend not to be a {grateful} morning person.

Hopefully each Monday you'll share with me what you are grateful for too!
